OUGD602 Evaluation

I have really enjoyed PPP this year and despite not perusing graphic design as a career I think it has given me the perfect opportunity to round off my 3 years as one. Doing the personal branding gave me time to reflect on my time at uni and everything I have learnt on my journey here. The branding I have produced is really representative of myself and my creativity as well as my love for the colour pink.

Last summer I did a placement at a branding agency and I think that is what made me truly realise I didn’t want to go into graphic design, compared to the voluntary work I had done in primary schools it was nowhere near as enjoyable.

Initially I felt a bit silly wanting to change from graphic design to primary teaching but I am really happy with all the support and encouragement I have received this year from all staff. I am glad that my PPP blog has given me a platform to talk about my experience apply for a PGCE. I went through a long research, application and interview process before being offered a place on a SCITT course and it is nice to look back at this on my blog as well as show people what I have been doing.

6B2, 6C2 - website development

previous design had lots of images per project, a bit too much. All projects and their descriptions were on one page.
lots of images and very little room to breath

now my home page consists of 3 images per project that are all clickable and take you to the specific project page explaining the brief more in depth

6C2 - paper stock, printing

As I am trying to be more conscious about recycling and reducing waste in my personal life I have chosen to use a recycled paper stock for my cv, it adds a dark undertone to the print but also a nice texture. I have also used recycled card for the business cards which has a nice fleck of different colours throughout but they aren't too noticeable.

6C2 - Design Strategy File

I wanted something simple that would link well to my self branding. I think it looks consistent and professional

6C2 - manifesto

designing my manifesto to match my self branding. I want to create a consistent design strategy file

6B2 - Evaluation of voluntary work

Over the limited time I have been at Dalton School I have learnt many valuable skills and things about myself. I now know that I can adapt myself well and think on my feet when I need to, it also helped me improve my leadership skills, communication skills and ability to help as well as discipline young children. Over my time there I have found it remarkable how much development the children made in their reading and writing skills and I was grateful for the opportunity to support the activities which engaged the children and enabled them to achieve while still having fun. Being able to see the children develop was hugely rewarding and I look forward to actively contributing to this further during my teaching career. From my work experience it is clear to me that teaching is the career path I want to go down and doing a PGCE seems the best way for me to achieve this. I am now even more excited to start my teacher training in September.

6B2, 6A2 - GLOVE designing in the future

Todays task was to think about the future of graphic design and what will need to be designed in a world 10 years from now.

As a group we thought about what social media will be about in 2029 and we thought about the future of instagram as we think this will still be around.

Instagram is currently used by lots of fashion bloggers to promote outfits. This has developed into try on videos and styling videos on IGTV.  We imagine this will develop into the viewer being able to try the outfits on their actual bodies in the comfort of their own home before ordering them.

6A2, 6B2 - ideal job

Coming up with the name of our dream job title.

As I am not pursuing a career in graphic design I wanted think outside of this field and come up with a title for a job I would really love - working with animals (preferably farm animals).

I imagine myself owning some sort of petting zoo/ cafe so needed a name perfect for this job role.

I used designtitle.com to help me come up with the right words to use.

The name ideas I had were:
Magician of fluffy well-being
connoisseur of small animals
I went with Connoisseur of  Fluffy Well Being. The feedback I got was: it's fun and lighthearted and suits the job role well.

6B2 - Time management

Planning my time, using monthly calendars to plan day by day

also making regular to do lists helps me break down what i need to do day by day

6B2, 6C2 - business card designing

6B2, 6D2 - volunteering at dalton school

I do my voluntary work every Tuesday at Dalton Junior and Infant School, I chose to do my voluntary work here as  it was my old primary school therefore holds many great memories for me. After receiving my offer for the SCITT at Kirklees and Calderdale training centre they advised me to get some more experience and volunteer at a different school if possible.

I had previously done my volunteering at Berry Brow Infant and Nursery School and I really enjoyed my time here. I worked in a reception class of 54 children and I think working in such a chaotic environment really improved my confidence in the classroom.

Dalton school is very different, the class sizes are much smaller.
I am now in a year 2 class of 24 pupils.

The routine:

Morning: Arrive at school and get briefed on the day and help set up the classroom

8:40: Help them children with their morning activities.

9am-10am: Usually after registration the children have an english task, during this I take some of the children out individually and help them with their reading. I often ask the children questions about the books they are reading or ask them to recap things they have read.

10am: The children have a 15 minute playtime

11am: After milk time there is then a short maths lesson which I assist with, I help by taking the children through the questions step by step and talking them through how to answer it.

12.40pm: Lunchtime

1.40pm: After lunch we usually do RE or art I then use this time to take more children out for reading.

2.30-3.30pm: catching up on work that should've been finished earlier or doing some maths or spelling.

Week 1: 05th March
Week 2:  12th March
