Interview - Greta Madune

Main points/ messages from her:

  • Focus on communication
  • Find unique ways to approach people and communicate with people, she sent a box as her application and made the answer on the application into a brand. Making things interesting is key as people will remember it and it will stand out from everyone else.
  • Don't have any limits, do what you want to do no matter what people say. You don't have to stick to being a graphic designer you can do whatever you want.
  • How can you combine other skills/hobbies together? Roll them all into one
  • There is no wrong or right way, trust your gut feeling and just be yourself
  • Talking to people is so important, always message people and keep in contact. Sending christmas/ seasonal things to keep in touch. Just go for it and email people.
  • The kennedy's- no limits, loads of facilities, no rent to pay, work is payed, no limits, they support any ideas, 7 people merging ideas.
  • Own interests help work, such as everything gold is a big thing in her work. If it doesn't work for a client then its scrapped but if it does then it is encouraged. A lot of clients some how incorporate gold some how. The gold is infectious.
  • People who care about who you are will message you and be interested, find people who you like and can engage with. Know a lot about them before emailing, make sure your email is personal.
  • Favourite project is based on the work in Lithuania, she met a lot of interesting people whilst doing it and gained a lot from it.
  • You don't need have to have knowledge of everything to do it, she has no experience in fashion yet she has her own fashion brand. You're not just a graphic designer,  you can design anything.
  • Creativity comes with a lot of ego, this stops you from creating good work. Don't hide your work from people, show anything and get feedback on it. Don't be too precious.
  • Come up with ideas, don't focus on the final outcome.
  • Working around less enthusiastic people can make creating work hard. Especially when people don't really understand your ideas and don't agree with them. Always stand your ground if its something you're passionate about.
  • You don't have to be one thing, you don't need to specialise. Keep options open.
  • Question everyone and everything, don't just accept things.

Summer

As my summer project brief was baking related I ended up spending about 80% of my summer in the kitchen trying new recipes. I love everything cake related so I thought that creating a book about this would be an easy task and pretty much a dream come true. I made a list of about 100 recipes that I wanted to try and make however I was a little too ambitious and tried less than half of these. At first I started off steady and baked something roughly once a week however I realised that this wasn't going to give me enough content for my book so I decided to up this to 3/4 times a week which my family were pleased about. However after a while I began to get bored and was baking because I needed to not because I wanted to and something I usually do to relax became a stressful task. I decided from the start that I wanted to take pictures of the ingredient as well as the final outcome therefore the pressure was on to make the ingredient look appealing and by the time I had done this I was bored and couldn't be bothered baking anymore. I stuck it out and persevered with it in order to get the content I needed, however I haven't done any baking since and think it will be a while until I do any again.  Despite getting a bit bored of doing so much baking I did enjoy developing a project on something I am passionate about and once I am over my hatred towards baking I'd love to do work related to it again.
